"Google Drive for Desktop" was discontinued a while back and the desktop client was rebranded to "Google Backup & Sync" which is now being discontinued in favor of the New™ "Google Drive for Desktop"
they've jerked mobile access to google voice back and forth between a dedicated voice app and the hangouts app or such (it may have made a stop in a g+ app or something for a while?) repeatedly as well...

So I finally switched back to "Google Drive for Desktop" and it's eating so much RAM!! It chews through 4GB of RAM to sync files with my desktop, and then never lets go of it.
"Google Backup and Sync" did not have this problem and served the same exact function as "Google Drive for Desktop"

To show receipts, here's a screenshot of memory utilization from Backup and Sync, which has been running continuously on this machine for over a month and is only using 470MB of RAM
And to be clear: It does the same things Google Drive for Desktop does
