Watching the flood of ludicrous stupidity in the aftermath of Apple's ARM jump announcement is... uh... *extremely* entertaining. Because most commentators don't understand the actual tradeoffs here, don't understand why x86 has dominated the PC space for the past 30 years, and are just repeating nonsense they heard from othrr people who don't understand.
Suffice to say that if you think MS is changing primary arch any time soon you're out of your goddamn mind.
What's x86 better than ARM at? I think having a smaller instruction set means you more need instructions in order to achieve the same things as with less instructions on a larger instruction set, am I right? I honestly know very little about processors.
ARM is arguably in many ways a better design than x86 in some ways. Right now, on the extreme high end, x86 is beating ARM on performance. But a lot of that's funding. x86 does not have better performance *by design.* It's not inherent.
The reason x86 has dominated the market is compatibility. Microsoft realized early on that the one thing that mattered most was making sure that users could keep running their apps indefinitely. And thus has x86 prospered.
Bought a small household item from a known-name online store. The item arrived in Amazon packaging. Checked the item on Amazon, it's half the price I paid on the non-Amazon store. I got fucking scammed lads. Even when you're trying to not buy from Amazon, you end up with Amazon. Contacted customer support 😐
A few minutes ago I posted that it's 2020 and I still can't get my pictures from my phone onto my laptop without using a Mac. But then I decided to give it a try... and it seems to work!? What Gnome magic is this⁈
